Wat moet je doen?
Je moet een aanvraag indienen
en bij die aanvraag een c.v. insluiten.

Ongeacht de lengte van het leven
moet het c.v. kort zijn.

Bondigheid en selectie zijn verplicht.
Vervang landschappen door adressen
en wankele herinneringen door muurvaste data.

Van alle liefdes volstaat de echtelijke,
en van de kinderen alleen die welke geboren zijn.

Wie jou kent is belangrijker dan wie jij kent.
Reizen alleen indien buitenslands.
Lidmaatschappen waarvan, maar niet waarom.
Onderscheidingen zonder waarvoor.

Schrijf zo alsof je nooit met jezelf hebt gepraat
en ver uit je eigen buurt bent gebleven.

Ga zwijgend voorbij aan honden, katten en vogels,
rommeltjes van vroeger, vrienden en dromen.

Liever de prijs dan de waarde,
de titel dan de inhoud.

Eerder de schoenmaat dan waarheen hij loopt,
hij voor wie jij doorgaat.
Daarbij een foto met één oor vrij.
Zijn vorm telt, niet wat het hoort.
Wat hoort het dan?
Het dreunen van de papiervernietigers.

What we don't know can hurt us

Onze voedingsindustrie heeft er een handje van om ons massaal voor de gek te houden. Margarine dat zogenaamd beter voor ons is dan boter zit vol met transvet. Bruin brood wordt soms gemaakt van wit meel met kleurstof. Bestrijdingsmiddelen heten tegenwoordig beschermingsmiddelen,.

Deze week las ik een interessante column van Mark Bittman getiteld "The Human Cost of Animal Suffering". De column gaat over de ervaringen van Timothy Pachirat, een politicoloog, die vijf maanden undercover heeft gewerkt in een grote geïndustrialiseerde slachterij in Amerika. Dit heeft hij gedaan om onderzoek te doen naar de vraag hoe geweld in onze maatschappij genormaliseerd wordt. Onder andere door alle oncomfortabele waarheden buiten beeld te houden, is één van zijn conclusies. Wat niet weet, dat niet deert.

Helaas gaat dat voor ons voedsel niet meer op. Wat niet weet, dat deert juist wel, omdat het niet weten ervoor zorgt dat we niet de keuzes kunnen maken die we misschien zouden willen maken.

Let's be unrealistic dreamers

This morning I read a tweet from Mark Bittman with a link to a speech by Haruki Murakami. Of course the speech was brilliant. I believe almost everything the man writes is brilliant (sorry I am a huge fan). But what also made me read the whole speech while drinking my coffee, is that it said the English translation of the speech was produced as part of a collaborative translation project entitled Planting Seeds Together.

I find it so inspirational that people all over the world, who very often don't know each other, come together on subjects that are important to them. They share their attention, their time and their knowledge to do things that matter. Internet in itself has always allowed us to do so, but social media such as twitter and facebook have made it so much easier.

Besides writing about the nuclear disaster in Japan, Murakami writes so beautifully on the power (dangerous when misused) of communication.

From the speech:

"We had gone beyond the point of no return. The deed was done. Those who doubted nuclear power generation were now asked the intimidating question, “Would you be in favour of power shortages?” Consequently, those who harbour doubts about nuclear power generation came to be labelled as “unrealistic dreamers”. And so we arrived where we are today. Nuclear power plants, which were supposed to be efficient, instead offer us a vision of hell. This is the reality. The so-called “reality” that has been proclaimed by those who promote nuclear power however, isn’t reality at all. It is nothing more than superficial “convenience”, which their flawed logic confused with reality itself."

And

"How wonderful it would be if we could build a house of “unrealistic dreamers” and forge a “community of spirit” that would transcend both country and culture. I believe this would be the starting point for our rebirth, as we have experienced many natural disasters and wanton acts of terrorism in recent times. We must not be afraid to dream. We should never allow the crazed dogs named “efficiency” and “convenience” to catch up with us. We must be “unrealistic dreamers”, who stride forward vigorously. Human beings will die and disappear, but humanity will prevail and will be constantly regenerated. Above all, we must believe in this force."
